Interiors, Emerging Artist Showcase
Cassandra stands next to her three pastel drawings hanging in 14 Bells Fine Art Gallery, June.17/2023
When approaching the theme “Interiors” I wanted to depict life interacting with an interior space that we normally couldn’t see. I used microscopic images of the inside of the human body as inspiration behind my pastel drawings. By emphasizing the inner workings of the body at such a small scale with a unique color palette, my hope is that it will inspire the viewer to deeply consider the complexities of life that sustain us and our environment. Each drawing is composed of three to four layers of soft pastel and gesso.
“Tooth Pulp” depicts the inner cave of the tooth, called Pulpa, which is loaded with tiny odontoblasts and blood vessels that care for the tooth. “Lung Pocket” represents the inside of a lung Alveolus, where the lungs and and the blood exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide while breathing in and out. “Stomach Mucin” depicts the surface of the mucous membrane of the stomach. The red color makes up the individual cells of the mucus membrane and the blue color the attached mucus.
